The SAMS community celebrated a tremendous accomplishment on Friday, May 15, as the school was officially designated a “Schools to Watch Middle School” during a jam-packed assembly that featured state legislators, community leaders, and district administrators.
The celebration marked the end of a multi-year effort in which SAMS had to prove excellence in academics, leadership, and school culture. The process required a formal evaluation: Students were interviewed and staff were surveyed. Education leaders toured SAMS and watched live lessons. Achievement data was reviewed and studied. The committee concluded that SAMS had earned the distinction after it met all 37 research-based criteria.
Student Council President and SAMS Salmon editor Nate Lorence hosted the assembly as emcee. His welcome was followed by the SAMS orchestra and the 8th grade chorus’ rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
SAMS students spoke next. Milah Herd, Javon Ronel, Lucy Barr, and Awurama Ayree provided information on the Schools to Watch categories: academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures and processes.

“I felt proud at the ceremony because I play a role at this school,” seventh grader Johnny Jones said. “At SAMS, I’m part of the football, baseball, and basketball teams. I have to keep my grades up so I can play the sports I love. My teachers help me by encouraging me to study and do my best. If I need help, they are always there.”
Ms. Spondike’s 7/8 Concert Band helped move the presentation along with a performance of Randall Standridge’s “Blue Sky Horizon” before Shaler Area Superintendent Dr. O’Black and School Board Vice President Ms. Phillips took turns addressing the crowd.
Superintendent O’Black focused his remarks on the contributions of the entire school community – from students to staff. “This recognition belongs to all of you,” he said. “Your hard work is what makes SAMS an exceptional place.”
Following an introduction from Bridge Teacher Mr. Interthal, art educator and Year Book Sponsor Mr. Casey played a Year in Review slideshow that highlighted moments from the 2025-2026 school year. The photos captured scenes throughout the middle school hallways. Included were photos from Homecoming, Veteran’s Day, the spring musical, and band and music concerts. It had pictures of the SAMS sports teams, clubs, and groups.
Local and state politicians then addressed the crowd. State Representative Lindsay Powell and State Senator Lindsay Williams discussed the importance of public education and highlighted the dedication of SAMS teachers. Each presented SAMS with a citation to celebrate the accomplishment.
“They [the teachers] care about you [students] and are making this experience fantastic,” Representative Powell said.
“This is a big honor that comes from a lot of work from each of you here today,” Senator Wiliams said.
The Honorable Sara Innamorato, Allegheny County Executive, commended the students and presented SAMS with an official proclamation. She highlighted the good work that our students have done. “Most importantly, congratulations to the students,” she said. “You are an incredible part of this recognition. Strong public schools create stronger communities.”
After some more music, Schools to Watch Director Bruce Vosburgh presented SAMS students Andrew Brown, Neva Cosentino, Timothy Molnar, and Kaylee Shupe with a commemorative banner in honor of the award.
Head principal Dr. Howard closed the ceremony with an inspiring and proud speech. Dr. Howard was the driving force behind the Schools to Watch recognition. She made the pursuit a priority for staff and students and led the process from start-to-finish.
“I am so incredibly proud to be the principal here,” Dr. Howard said. “I am excited to be here every day. This is one of those moments that we are going to remember. This year has been our year to shine.”
This was an incredible experience for not just the students and teachers, but for the entire Shaler Area community. This is a time we will all remember for a lifetime. It was an honor to work with this program.
