What started as an ordinary Wednesday quickly became one of the most unforgettable—and inspiring—days of the school year at Shaler Area Middle School.
During Period 2, around 8:45 a.m., an unexpected fire alarm sounded, prompting a full evacuation. Even without prior notice, students and staff responded immediately and responsibly, following the procedures they’ve practiced throughout the year. Within seconds, classrooms were cleared and everyone safely exited the building.
Outside, a light drizzle greeted students and teachers as they gathered on the track. But within moments, the weather took a dramatic turn. The drizzle became a heavy downpour, soaking everyone in seconds.
As the rain intensified, teachers sprang into action. Ms. West moved quickly through groups of students, helping keep everyone calm and together. Mr. Lagamba helped direct traffic on the track, making sure students kept moving safely and avoided crowding. When some students headed toward the bleachers, Mr. Heller stepped in to keep order and guide them away once lightning made that area unsafe. Nearby, Mr. Reagle helped students regroup and led them toward safer positions, working closely with other staff.
The situation continued to evolve as emergency responders arrived at the school, located at 1800 Mount Royal. Preliminary assessments later suggested the alarm was likely caused by a sensor issue in the roof above the main office, triggered by heavy rainfall and dust from ongoing work. Out of caution, local fire crews conducted a full inspection of the building.
Superintendent Dr. Oblack, who was at another building at the time, quickly arrived to support first responders and coordinate with school leadership.
Throughout it all, strong leadership from the main office made a clear difference. Principal Dr. Howard remained focused and steady, helping oversee the response and ensuring decisions were made with student safety first. Assistant Principal Mitch Shaw worked side by side with staff, communicating directions clearly and helping organize the large group outside in challenging conditions.
Meanwhile, the storm showed no signs of letting up. For nearly 30 minutes, students and staff stood in the pouring rain—but they did it together. Ms. Barner could be seen helping students stay positive despite the weather, while Mr. Alexander assisted in directing groups to stay organized and attentive. Ms. Swartzbaugh worked to keep lines orderly, making sure students remained where they needed to be, and Ms. Butler supported communication efforts by relaying directions and helping students understand what to do next.
Once crews completed an initial sweep, Dr. Howard and Mr. Shaw made the call to move everyone into the gymnasium. Under their direction, staff worked together seamlessly, guiding hundreds of students safely inside.
In the gym, soaked but in good spirits, students and teachers gathered as the storm raged outside. Despite everything, there was a strong sense of unity and pride throughout the room.
The district later shared, “Families have been advised, and all students and staff are safe and accounted for. The safety and well-being of our school community remain our highest priorities, and our established emergency protocols were followed precisely and efficiently.”
After the building was fully cleared, Mr. Shaw gathered teachers at midcourt for a quick meeting. As they came together, students broke into applause and cheers—recognizing the effort, care, and leadership shown throughout the situation.
From there, the professionalism of the staff stood out once again. Teachers listened closely to directions, worked together, and calmly escorted students—still drenched but smiling—back to their Period 2 classes. Administrators adjusted the schedule, canceling Period 3 and resuming with Period 4, allowing the day to continue as smoothly as possible.
While many names stand out, it’s important to recognize that countless other teachers and staff members also played key roles—helping students, maintaining order, supporting one another, and doing whatever was needed in the moment.
This was more than just an unexpected disruption—it was a powerful example of what our school community can do. Through teamwork, leadership, and determination, everyone rose to the occasion.
The rest of the day may have been challenging, but it proved something important: no matter what comes our way, we are ready—and we rise together.
