Thanks to the staffs from Shaler North Hills Library and Ed and Mark’s Shop’ N Save, several talented student writers have earned the distinction of Flash Fiction Contest winners.
Ms. Ing from SNHL organized this winter’s contest for SAMS seventh graders in honor of Mr. Edward Loskamp, a long-time Shop’ N Save owner and lover of literature who passed away in November.
Students were encouraged to submit 1,000 word Flash Fiction stories that featured “creative introductions” and “convincing characters.” Entries were judged on “overall originality” by Ms. Ing and other library workers, and the results were announced today.
Emma Cochran’s “Freeing Souls” was selected as the First Place submission, which came with a $75 cash prize.
Grace Helbling took Second Place and $55 for “The Fallen Star.”
Andrew Purucker’s “We Are Not Marauding” and Nick Mulkerin’s “The Time Tunnel” tied for Third Place, which brought $35 each.
A handful of students earned honorable mention for their submissions, which came with a $20 prize per winner: Rose Molnar’s “From Foe to Family,” Tatum Perez’s “Finding Me,” Heather Susany’s “The Dream,” Rebecca Calafino’s “Mirror’s Ghost,” and Izzy Gehringer’s “The Realm” were selected.
According to the contest flyer, Mr. Loskamp “believed in the power of story and the importance of sharing one’s story with others.”
He was described as an “ardent supporter” of Shaler Area and the Shaler North Hills Library. Contest donations were provided through the generosity of Ed and Mark’s Shop’ N Save.
The ELA-7 staff sends a sincere thank you to Ms. Ing, the staff at SNHL, the family of Mr. Loskamp, and everyone at Ed and Mark’s for organizing the contest.
