You might’ve seen your peers wearing different clothing brands, jewelry, or different styles. Have you ever wondered why? “Why do people wear different styles than me?” Or maybe why other students may stick to groups with similar styles? Different fashion styles and brands come from around the world with different trends originating from all around the globe.
“It gives people the ability to express their personalities and be who they are.” Everly Coughenour says this, meaning that the clothes someone wears can convey their personality, interests, or even their mood.
Meeting new people might be hard for someone who is introverted and doesn’t want to get hurt. One way that can be helped is finding someone that might be wearing a shirt that has a character or show they may enjoy. For example, someone who may be new that enjoys a series, like Star Wars for example, could feel lonely until they meet someone that wears their interests out in the open.
I’ve seen many combinations of different styles around SAMS. For example, many people wear the Grunge and <italicized>Streetwear<italicized> styles. Grunge is a style that includes graphic tees, loads of jewelry, large oversized jeans, and sometimes layered-multi colored shirts. The style we have dubbed Streetwear is a lot of hoodies, blank or graphic tees, and jeans, all in different colors.
“Fashion” has been around for centuries. Different peoples and cultures from all around the world have worn and made their own clothes out of materials that range from expensive silks to rare hunted animal pelts and even organic plant fibers. In ancient times, many of you know the Greeks and Romans wore tunics and drapes of fabric over themselves as clothing— at the time, that was the fashion trend! Just because it’s from a while ago doesn’t mean it wasn’t what we now label as “trends”. Many elite women and men from the seventeenth to the late nineteenth century wore trends during that time. For example; large dresses but with a structured silhouette— or for the men, they wore tights, large coats, and rich men and women both wore wigs to hide their real hair— that too was a fashion trend.
Even animals will sometimes only mate with each other because of their looks. The Maratus Spider or more well known as the Peacock Spider is a small species of spider in which females are larger than males and are very bland looking. Males on the other hand are much smaller and quite colorful(hence, we get the name “peacock spider” from).
Fashion is something that you can make your own or join others styles and talk about with other students here at SAMS. Ms. Stewart says, “I enjoy being a teacher here and seeing all the different styles, and I’m glad our school doesn’t have conformed uniforms. Also some students who might be quieter and might not be able to show how they are as a person can show it in other ways such as in a silent way like the way they dress.”
Fashion plays an important part of shaping people’s identities. Whether someone uses it to express themselves or to just be comfy. The way people dress often reflects who they are and how they see themselves. What is your fashion style?
