The “Dark Web” is popular, terrifying, and dangerous

Written By Lillian Warner

You have most likely heard of the Dark Web because of its popularity, but it is popular for all the wrong reasons.

The Dark Web is a deep, hidden, and unregulated part of the internet that cannot be accessed through standard search engines. To access the Dark Web, a user needs specialized software such as the Tor browser, which provides anonymity, highlighting its potential dangers.

Many people are curious about the Dark Web because it is secretive and unknown, but curiosity can quickly turn into danger if someone is not careful.

While the Dark Web has valid uses, such as allowing whistleblowers to share information safely or helping people avoid censorship, it is also a place where crimes are committed. This includes selling illegal data, drugs, or malware. Some content found there involves serious crimes, and people sometimes use encrypted messaging to plan or discuss illegal activity.

The Dark Web is the source of several grisly crimes and Internet legends.

One is the “Rotenburg” case involving a German named Armin Meiwes, a murderer who used the Dark Web to commit horrific crimes. Meiwes was convicted because he posted evidence of the murder to the very forum where he met his victim.

The “Freaky Soup Guy” is a scary Dark Web Video that shows a distraught man eating soup and crying, surrounded by two people in costumes. It is alleged that the video originated on the Dark Web, and some people claim that the man was kidnapped and forced to eat contaminated soup. Others believe this is an internet hoax that was popularized by Dark Web forums.

Another well-known case connected to the Dark Web is the Silk Road case,  which involved an illegal online marketplace used to sell drugs and other unlawful items. While Silk Road operated on the Dark Web, the people involved were eventually caught, showing that crimes committed online can still have serious real-world consequences.

It is important to note that rumors surround some Dark Web stories and videos, and not all details have been proven to be true, as many stories become exaggerated as they spread across the internet.

Even though the Dark Web is one of the most dangerous parts of the internet, it makes up less than 0.01% of the entire internet.

If you ever accidentally access the Dark Web, there are many things to avoid. You should never click on pop-up windows, suspicious links, or download unknown files, as they could contain malware. Using strong antivirus software and Dark Web monitoring features can help protect you, but the best course of action is to strictly use regulated browsers. If you are concerned about tracking or cookies, private search engines such as DuckDuckGo collect minimal information.

While many people think it is illegal to access the Dark Web, it actually is not. It only becomes illegal if you use it to commit a crime, which can lead to serious consequences. Even though simply accessing it is legal, it is still dangerous and can put you at risk.

In the end, the Dark Web may seem mysterious or tempting, but staying on the safe, legal parts of the internet is always the smarter choice.

The dark web hosts 6 percent of the Internet though intentionally hidden and anonymous forums that often lead to criminal behaviors.
