On Friday, February 14, SAMS students participated in a meaningful and educational session related to the Holocaust led by Ms. Hlad. The session, a second in a three-part series, was dedicated to teaching students about history and the importance of remembering tragic events from the past.
During the session, students studied a wide range of laws, decrees, and significant historical events that shaped the course of the Holocaust. The focus was on key moments, including Hitler’s expansion across Europe, the systematic construction of concentration camps, and the eventual liberation of these camps by the United States.
In small groups, students worked together to organize a timeline of these events, categorizing them into two main groups: laws and decrees and historical events. This exercise helped students understand the structure and progression of the Holocaust, as well as the impact of these laws on the Jewish population and other persecuted groups.
The activity was followed by a class discussion in which students reflected on the key events and their significance. Each student then researched one law and one historical event in more detail. They were asked to focus on the broader context of these events, how they impacted people at the time, and the lessons we can learn today.
To wrap up the session, the class went around the room, and each student shared what they had learned from their research. The opportunity to hear different perspectives and insights from their classmates deepened their understanding of the Holocaust and its lasting impact on history.
This session was not only an important learning experience but also an opportunity for students to reflect on the importance of tolerance, understanding, and the value of remembering history to prevent such tragedies from happening again in the future.
