Students treated by rare chance to play legendary “Tennis Ball Challenge” game

By Period 6 WIN

Students in Mr. Duermeyer’s WIN classes were treated to a rare appearance of the “Tennis Ball Challenge” on the Friday before Spring Break.

What was listed as a “TDA REVIEW” on the room’s whiteboard became a suprise tournament of the classic game that orginated at the Scott Avenue Sams in 2004.

The challenge goes like this: In teams of two, students simaltaneously pass and shoot tennis balls into green recycle bins that are located at each end of the classroom. Each round lasts a minute and a point only counts if a ball is passed and then shot into the bin.

Players are prohibited from blocking the other team’s shots, and shooters are only permitted to pass and shoot one ball at a time. Cheaters are disqualifed and given a lifetime ban.

The tournament produced a new class record, as Scott “Scoot” Beatty scored 28 points in a round. Michael Paul was credited with the assists. The next closest was Mr. Duermeyer, who scored 24 points.

It wasn’t quite March Madness at the PPG Paints Arena, but students enjoyed The Challenge for what it was: a brief break from the rigors of TDA practice.

Unfortunately for them, the TDA practice was moved to Monday, April 1, the first day back from spring break.
