Students decorate hallways to promote positive behaviors

By Lily Rose and Taelyn Montgomery

On Friday, March 8th, SAMS students participated in a school-wide incentive for the behavioral program known as SWIBIS. The school ran a half-day schedule but instead of going home, students decorated the hallways with Pittsburgh themes during the second half of the day. For example, the Centurion seventh grade hallway adopted a Pittsburgh sports theme and students decorated with the city’s pro teams in mind.

Students in Mr. Duermeyer’s room students decorated using a Pittsburgh Penguins theme. Students were encouraged to write any Penguins player’s name and number on paper jerseys, which were cut out and hung beneath drawings of the franchise’s five Stanley Cups. Those inside the classroom worked on jerseys while the student teacher Ms. Schrim cut them out. In the hallway, Mr. Duermeyer, Mrs. Spondike, Taelyn Montgomery, and Olivia Claycomb worked on putting up Penguins logo drawings, that Alyssa Walsh helped draw, and the jerseys students created.

The other hallways were filled with a load of decorations too. In the 7th grade hallway on the second floor, there were a lot of Kennywood references. The poster at the beginning of that hall listed the park’s classic rides and iconic food options. In the 8th grade hallway on the 1st floor, students focused on skylines and inspirational quotes. An 8th grade hallway made Pittsburgh bridges out of popsicle sticks, and other students worked to create Steelers, Pirates, and Riverhound displays.

Following the incentive, Ms. Biagiarelli was proud to annouce that students were responsible, behaved, and cooperative. Student reaction was also positive: “I had a lot of fun hanging up a skyline poster with friends,” 7th grader. Lilly Wilcox said.

We had fun decorating the hallways, and thanks to all the teachers, the outside of our classrooms looks a lot better now. It was overall a fun day.
