Winter 2024 may not be remembered for its snow, but SAMS students will likely be able to recall another memorable ice skating trip to North Park.
The Jan. 18 field trip was once again sponsored by the seventh grade science teachers.
Students qualified for the trip by having academic and behavioral successes. Those who went were greeted with a wonderful day of skating.
For the second consecutive year, the weather cooperated, with temperatures hovering in the low to mid 30s. There were no snowflakes this year, but that didn’t stop more than 200 students from making the most out of a trip to North Park’s rink.
Students had the option of renting skates, which caused a long line that moved steadily. North Park also had plastic skate tutors available for novice skaters. The tutors created a bit of a log jam on the ice, but they also made the event safer and more fun for the students who were shaky on their skates.
After everyone got their skates, many went out on the ice. Some students stayed inside and sat at the lunch tables at the food area while they talked and laughed.
Students who play hockey or figure skate zoomed around on the ice and several teachers showed their skills by weaving in and out of traffic. Although he emerged unscathed, Mr. Bacco set a potential world record for dangerous crashes.
Later that day, kids were called in for lunch by teams. Most kids packed lunch, but there were brown bags available for anyone who was hungry.
At the end of the day, students filled the busses and headed back to SAMS. Many goofed around and laughed the whole way back to the school. It was a very tiring day, but there is no doubt in my mind that it was one of the best field trips.
